WATER PEOPLE THEATER
We believe in the transformative power of Theater.
Water People Theater is a nonprofit organization that believes in the transformative power of theater. We have produced socially engaged bilingual and inclusive programming for over two decades.
Our mission is to leverage the power of high-quality performances and educational offerings to advance social values and defend human rights. We aim to inspire diverse audiences to become changemakers contributing to more equitable, just, and inclusive communities.
Music plays a crucial role, with haunting Simón Díaz’s song «Tonada de Luna Llena» rekindling Paulina’s lost childhood memories of love, guided by memories of her mother and daughter. Her best friend Rodrigo making extraordinary efforts to help, Paulina’s journey is deeply emotional. Fragments of her memories come alive unexpectedly, offering a moving exploration of memory, loss, and hope.
The play premiered at the Steppenwolf 1700 Theater in Chicago and toured at the Repertorio Español in New York City. Specialized critics unanimously acclaimed it as both powerful and poetically stirring.
The play will be performed in English with Spanish subtitles.

For more than two decades Water People Theater has created bilingual theater that is devoted to promoting social and human values. At its core, this Latina and immigrant-led nonprofit believes that theater has the power to spark conversation and transform people.
Through their performances and educational offerings Water People Theater seeks to inspire audiences to become changemakers and foster equitable and inclusive communities.
“Theater has the power to profoundly move and transform us,” says Rebeca Alemán, Water People Theater’s executive director and founder. “It’s an art form that reaches our humanity’s depths, evoking empathy, compassion, and a shared sense of purpose. This transformative experience is a profound act of faith in humanity, a constant celebration of life. Through theater, we engage in a continuous act of love, connecting with others and inspiring change.”
For those who don’t know, i.e. most folks who aren’t actively involved in live theatre, a «two hander» is a play with only two characters.
The Delicate Tears of the Waning Moon is such a play, which handles the issues of building an entire full length work consisting almost entirely of conversations between two people with impressive skill.

A taut psychological drama, The Delicate Tears of the Waning Moon is set in 2019 somewhere in Latin America. Somewhere in a country immersed in violence and corruption, a world where cruelty is habit, impunity is routine, liberty is utopian and revealing the truth poses the greatest danger of all. Alemán stars as Paulina, a human rights journalist and advocate for victims of femicide and indigenous communities. After surviving a vicious attack that left her in a coma, Paulina struggles to regain her memory. With fellow journalist Rodrigo (Eric K. Roberts) at her side, she must painstakingly piece together the truth in order to demand justice. Based on true events, this powerful and poetically stirring drama addresses the relentless violation of human rights against journalists who strive to report the truth.
